South Dakota's leading non-profit organization in the fight against hunger is set to celebrate a significant milestone. For half a century, this charitable entity has been dedicated to ensuring food security across all 66 counties of the state. Originating under a different name, the organization began its journey as a community food pantry in Sioux Falls. Over the years, it underwent several transformations and partnerships that shaped its current identity.
The evolution of this organization reflects its commitment to adapt and expand its services. In the early stages, it operated under the Sioux Falls Ministerial Association before evolving into the Food Service Center, Inc. A major turning point occurred in 2004 when two prominent entities, the Black Hills Regional Food Bank Inc. and the Food Service Center, merged to form the Community Food Banks of South Dakota, Inc. Just six years later, the organization established a distribution center in Pierre and rebranded to Feeding South Dakota, solidifying its presence statewide. Throughout these changes, the core mission remained unwavering: to combat hunger and support rural communities.
In honor of this golden anniversary, Feeding South Dakota has planned an array of engaging events for both public and private participation. One innovative initiative is the weekly podcast series "50 Faces of Feeding South Dakota," available on YouTube, which showcases stories from individuals impacted by the organization’s efforts. Additionally, the new 605 Meal Makers monthly donation program offers supporters a way to contribute consistently. These initiatives highlight the organization's ongoing dedication to making a difference in the lives of South Dakotans.
